Senator Holly Mitchell & Esi Eggleston Bracey rocked it!

Senator Holly Mitchell & Esi Eggleston Bracey rocked it!

On July 3rd, California Governor Gavin Newsome signed into law, a ban on discrimination against multicultural women because of their natural hairstyles.

This groundbreaking legislation comes after several years of intense advocacy and legal battles that challenged several cases of unfair treatment of multicultural women based on a hairstyle.

At the forefront of this fight has been State Senator Holly Mitchell and Odyssey Woman & Unilever executive Esi Eggleston Bracey. California studies have shown that African-American women are 80% more likely to change their hairstyle to conform to social norms they feel are necessary to get ahead. Of course, this unfair treatment exists within a larger context of gender and racial disparities. Research shows that African-American and Hispanic women earn an average of 20% less than their white female counterparts for the same jobs.

We know that #BlackGirlMagic will continue to catch fire, and the California law will lead the way for legislative action across the nation.
